Now, I usually spend my time here warning you about fake boutiques and sob-story animal rescues. Today I want to talk about something different. Bigger, honestly, and a little harder to wrap your arms around.

It’s about artificial intelligence. Not the “robots are going to take over” version Hollywood’s been selling us for decades. Something quieter than that. And in some ways, scarier.

The Danger Nobody’s Talking About Loud Enough

When most people picture AI going wrong, they picture some dramatic scene where machines rise up and things spiral out of control. That’s the movie version. It makes for a good popcorn flick, but it’s not what keeps me up at night.

Here’s what does. Think about the systems that keep our everyday lives running. Power grids. Water treatment plants. Air traffic control. Satellite systems. The financial infrastructure that moves your money around every single day. Those systems all have safeguards. Smart people built redundancies and backups, and they thought hard about what could go wrong.

But here’s the thing about a safeguard. It’s only as good as the mind that built it. Every one of those defenses was designed against a threat that somebody could imagine at the time. So I have to ask, and I think you should too: who’s imagining the threats now? Are we even using AI to help imagine them? And who’s got the keys to go find the gaps nobody’s pictured yet?

AI Doesn’t Decide Anything. People Do.

Here’s the part that doesn’t get said loud enough. AI doesn’t decide what it learns. People do. We choose what it gets trained on. We choose which doors we hand it the keys to, and how fast we move before anybody’s actually checked the locks.

So when a country, a company, or somebody with a whole lot of power decides to race ahead no matter the cost, that’s not “AI’s mindset.” That’s a human mindset, wearing an AI mask.

It’s Not Coming Someday. It’s Already In There.

This next part is the piece I really want you sitting with. AI isn’t just some outside threat that might attack our critical systems someday down the road. It’s already inside a lot of them, right now, quietly helping run diagnostics, predicting maintenance needs, and watching for problems before they turn into disasters.

Take power grids, for example. AI algorithms are already at work there. They can automatically detect regional faults and voltage drops, then instantly isolate the failure and reroute electricity so the whole system doesn’t go dark. These are called self-healing grids, and honestly, that’s a genuinely good use of the technology.

But it also means AI is already living inside the power grid system. And every place we’ve handed AI a badge and let it walk in the door, we’ve also created a new way in. Not because the AI is plotting something. Because whoever has access to that map, whether they meant to share it or not, has handed the map over to someone else too.

So instead of just asking “can AI be trusted,” maybe the better question is: who decided what to hand it access to? And did anybody double check what it can actually do once it’s inside?

This Is Us Versus Us

Here’s where I land on all of this. I don’t think it’s us versus the machines. Not right now, anyway. I think it’s us versus us. AI is becoming more autonomous by the day, and we need to keep that in mind, but for now, a machine doesn’t decide what it learns. People do. People choose what it’s trained on. People choose what access it gets, what data it sees, what rules it follows, and how fast to move before anybody’s checked the work.

If a country or a company or a leader is racing to be first no matter the cost, that’s not the AI’s mindset. That’s a human mindset, plugged into AI.

You feed a living thing the wrong diet and it gets sick. Every farmer knows that. Every parent who’s ever raised a kid knows that. Even feeding yourself, you know that. Well, we’re feeding something right now. All of us. Every country, every company, every one of us using these tools every single day. And in some cases, we’re using them without even realizing it.

So what are we feeding it? I don’t have all the answers here, and honestly, the more I think about this, the more questions I come up with. But I am thinking about it, and I’m sharing those thoughts with you.
