Dear Friends,
I recently came across a story shared on a popular online forum (Reddit – r/Scams) where people talk about scams. It’s a perfect reminder that scammers are sneaky – but you can outsmart them!
Here’s what happened:
While shopping at Walmart, the story’s writer (who goes by the name “PositivelyLivid62192” on Reddit) was approached by an older woman who needed assistance. “Positively” didn’t work there, but of course, they offered a helping hand. (Yes, dear readers, kind souls still exist! 🥰)
The woman had her phone on speaker, and from a few steps away, “Positively” could hear a man’s voice giving her instructions through his thick accent – telling her to buy GameStop or Footlocker gift cards and give him the codes.
Sensing something was off, “Positively” asked the woman to mute her phone so they could chat privately. The woman whispered that the man claimed to be from Enterprise, the car rental company, and insisted she pay for a car rental using these gift cards.
Now, my dears, let me tell you: if someone claiming to be from a company tells you to pay in gift cards it is never, ever legit. Period.
Our hero, “Positively,” gently but firmly explained that Enterprise does NOT operate this way and advised her to hang up immediately – which she wisely did. One wrong step and those gift cards would have been gone in a flash – and with no rental car to show for it! 🚗
I don’t imagine “Positively” had a cape tucked under their jacket, but they were a hero that day, standing up for a stranger in a sea of bright fluorescent lights and shopping carts. 💖
Grammy’s Takeaway:
- Always be suspicious of anyone asking for gift cards over the phone.
- Speak up or ask for help if you can.
- If you’re unsure, just hang up, get a confirmed authentic number for the company, and call them directly using a verified number.
Remember, my dears, scammers love confusion and urgency – but a little common sense (and a kind stranger) can save the day! 🌟
Stay safe and scam-free,
💖 Grammy
